Special Events

Tie Dye-namite!- Saturday, July 6, 2:00-3:30 pm

This event will be held in the community room and registration will be required in order to make sure enough supplies are provided. The maximum amount of participants will be 12. In the first few minutes, the librarian will welcome the participants, explain what tie-dye is, and go over safety guidelines (wear gloves and aprons). Plain white T-shirts will be passed out to each participant. The librarian will show different examples of tie-dye patterns/color combinations and will walk children step-by-step in how to fold, twist, and bind the shirts with rubber bands to create different patterns. Once the children have bound their shirts with rubber bands, staff will direct them to put in plastic bags and take them home with paper instructions on how long to leave shirts in the bag and aftercare. When participants are leaving, staff will stamp their "National Parks Passport."

Staffing: One librarian and 3 volunteers will lead the program. They will pass out the T-shirts and materials to each attendee along with set up and tear down. At the end of the event, they will stamp passports for participation.

Budget: Materials needed for this event include: white T-shirts, gloves, aprons, Zip-loc bags, tie-dye colors, and containers with water. Total cost: $100.

DIY Friendship Bracelets - Saturday, July 13, 2:00-3:30 pm

This fun and interactive event will take place in the library's community room. Preregistration will be required and max occupancy will be limited to 15 participants. A librarian with assistance from 2 volunteers will host the program. Each participant will receive a friendship bracelet making kit which will include glass beads, white alphabet round beads, bead needles, elastic cords, and glue. The volunteers and librarian will already have cut the elastic cords and tied knots on the end. Attendees will use the bead needles to insert whatever colored beads they choose onto the bracelets along with letter beads to create a name. Once the bracelet is complete, staff will go around and tie an elastic cord knot to secure it. Lastly, the children will dab the glue onto the knot so that the beads won't fall off. After the bracelets are all finished, the children can either trade with friends doing the program, or give to friend once home. Refreshments and socializing after the bead making will go on until 3:30 and once event is over, the librarian and volunteers will stamp the children's "National Parks Passports" for participation.

Staffing: One librarian will host the event with 2 volunteers assisting with set up/tear down, refreshments table, setting up materials for participants, and stamping the passes at the end.

Budget: The total amount for the materials (glass beads, alphabet beads, needles, elastic cords, and glue) will cost $25. Refreshments will cost $15. Total amount: $40.

DIY Nature Journal - Saturday, July 20 11:00 am-1:00 pm

This program involves participants firstly making their own nature journal, then going on a scavenger hunt around the library to find hidden items to include in their journal (plants and animals). Registration will be required and limited to 12 participants. The event will be led by a volunteer from the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve who will lead the attendees in how to make and design their journals. After journal completion, children will be given an easy to read library map along with clues as to where items have been placed throughout the library, including plant and animal tangibles. Children will collect the items they have found via bags and return them to the community room where the librarian and volunteers will then add a corresponding page for each found item into their journal (ex: child found a mockingbird item, volunteer will staple an informative page about mockingbirds including coloring pages, connect the dots, facts, etc.). There will be many items available around the library, so children will have many opportunities to collect items. The child who finds the most items will receive up to 4 free Pennypickle's Workshop passes; all other children will receive day passes to the Santa Rosa Ecological Reserve. Once the event is completed, children will have their "National Parks Passports" stamped for participation.

Staffing: A volunteer from the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve will host the event. One librarian and two volunteers will set up and take down the event, create the maps and hide the items, staple pages, and stamp passes.

Budget: The event will be sponsored by Pennypickle's Workshop and the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve who will donate free passes to the attendees; the library will supply the materials to create the nature journals, printed worksheets of plants and animals along with the library maps, and the animal/plant tangibles. Total cost: $80.

#ROCKing @ the Library - Saturday, July 27 10:30 am-12:30 pm

This large event will be open to the public and will not require registration. Led by library volunteers and introduced by the children's librarian, this event will run for 2 hours. Children will be given one rock to start painting as creatively as they would like and, once dry, a paper will be stuck to the rock with the #SummerCamp@TPL along with a QR code to be scanned. Depending on the turn-out for the event, the child can paint another rock if they so desire. Once the child's rock/rocks is completed, the participant will bring the rock with them and place it anywhere in the city of Temecula in the hopes that someone will find the item, scan the QR code, gain more information about the library and summer reading program, post the #SummerCamp@TPL on social media and tag the library, and get involved/visit the library. Once the child has finished, volunteers will stamp their "National Parks Passport" for participation.

Staffing: The event will be hosted by the children's librarian and primarily run by a max of 5 volunteers who will assist participants with the materials to complete the task, taping the #SummerCamp@TPL onto the rocks, and stamping passports.

Budget: Acrylic paint should already be supplied by the library along with paintbrushes from previous activities, so the majority of the budget will solely be on the rocks. The library will print the #SummerCamp@TPL along with the QR code. Total cost: $40 dollars for 103 rocks that can be used in the future if not all painted.
